This gentleman's traveling was owned by Henry Knox (1750–1806), the first U.S. Secretary of War, who served in the administration of Pres. George Washington from 1789 to 1794. The kit is now owned by and displayed in the General Henry Knox Museum in Thomaston, Maine. Before the Revolution, Know was a bookseller who taught himself about artillery and, gaining the trust of Gen. Washington, served as chief of artillery of the Continental Army in most of Washington's campaigns.
